The Supreme Court of Brazil orders Elon Musk's X to be shut down

The Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered the complete suspension of Elon Musk's social media platform, X, for failing to appoint a local legal representative, as required by law. Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the suspension on August 30, threatening millions of users in the country with a five-day deadline for internet providers and app stores to block access. A daily fine of $8,900 will be imposed on users who attempt to bypass the ban using VPNs. X will remain suspended until compliance is achieved.

In his decision, de Moraes criticized Musk for disrespecting Brazilian sovereignty and the judiciary, asserting that Musk behaves as if he is above national laws. X anticipated this move, stating on August 29 that it expected to be shut down due to what it called "illegal orders" to suppress political opposition.

Musk, who has been involved in a criminal investigation for allegedly spreading misinformation about Brazil's elections, has yet to publicly respond to the suspension. However, he praised journalist Glenn Greenwald's analysis, which argued that Brazil and other democratic countries are increasingly stifling online dissent.

The suspension stems from an August 28 ruling where de Moraes demanded that X appoint a new legal representative within 24 hours, with non-compliance leading to the platform's suspension. X plans to publish the court's demands and related documents to maintain transparency and continue its commitment to free speech.

This suspension follows similar actions by Brazilian authorities, who have previously blocked websites and platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp for non-compliance with legal requirements.
