Stefon Diggs' move from catching passes from Josh Allen to working with C.J. Stroud signifies his transition between two top-tier NFL quarterbacks. Despite a career filled with memorable moments, Diggs' most iconic play likely came from a pass delivered by Case Keenum.
Now, over six years after their famous Minneapolis Miracle,
Diggs and Keenum are reunited with the Houston Texans. Keenum, who has seen
Diggs evolve over time, now perceives him as a more experienced and determined
player.
"I see a guy that is hungry for more," Keenum
shared with reporters on Monday, according to the team’s transcript. "He
has been there, he has tasted it, he doesn't just want to get there, he wants
to win it. He is putting in the time, putting in the effort, he is being
himself with us and it is fun to see."
On January 14, 2018, Keenum launched a 61-yard pass to
Diggs for a game-winning touchdown as time expired, propelling the Minnesota
Vikings past the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional Round with a score of
29-24.
At that time, Diggs was in his third NFL season, setting
the stage for six consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and four straight
Pro Bowl appearances. These achievements will accompany him into 2024, his
first year with the Texans after being traded from the Buffalo Bills, marking
the second trade of his career.
"I played with him in [20]17 and in [20]22, I saw a
big jump in experience there," noted Keenum, who is currently in his
second stint with Houston after playing for seven different teams throughout
his career. "In just a couple years too, I think even more
experience."
Over the last six years, Diggs has adapted to catching
passes from Kirk Cousins in Minnesota, Allen in Buffalo, and now Stroud in
Houston.
While the Keenum-to-Diggs connection remains a legendary
moment in Minnesota history, it's not Diggs' only postseason highlight. From
the 2019 season with the Vikings through last season with the Bills, Diggs has
consistently reached the playoffs, though he has yet to secure a Super Bowl
appearance.
The frustration from falling short in recent seasons has
been evident in Diggs' emotions, but his numbers and drive remain strong.
"I think when you have been to the playoffs and you
know what it takes to get to the wild card, divisional, championship round but
you haven't made it all the way to the big one and won the big one, I think
that just leaves you hungry," Keenum added.
